Another day, another honor for the player widely considered the finest to ever compete professionally in League of Legends.
As of T1’s group stage match versus Cloud9 in the 2022 World Championship, mid-laner Faker has competed in more than 100 games across numerous Worlds, with a 72-win to 28-loss record.
While this may seem like just another title for the three-time world champion to add to his collection, it actually represents a significant achievement in his almost 10-year career that no one has yet challenged.
Since the beginning of the year, many people have predicted that Faker will win his fourth global title. Throughout the LCK Spring Split, T1 went unbeaten, losing only one game in the Playoffs on their way to becoming the champions. The squad carried their success into the Summer Split, when they placed second in the area and advanced to the playoffs.
Faker has been a massive part of T1’s success at this year’s Worlds, as in only two days they have already eliminated the defending world champions, EDG, in the group stage before losing yesterday to the LEC’s Fnatic in a shocking upset. The fact that Faker has picked Akali in both games isn’t surprising, given that the champion is one on which he has a career win percentage of 64%, according to Oracle’s Elixir. Despite his difficulties with the lane, Faker is a formidable threat in team fights.
A key source of engagement for his team, Faker’s Lissandra has given many members of T1 access to a few kills since her debut at this year’s Worlds. His opponent in the lanes today, Jensen, is ranked third in Worlds experience with 83 games played, behind only Team Vitality’s Perkz (86 games played).
This apparently unending League career of Faker’s will resume next Thursday when all of Group A will have completed their second round robin. T1’s continued success or failure in their pursuit of a fourth championship hinges on the outcome of this match.
